Supetar (Brac)
Supetar (Brac)
Supetar is the biggest village on Brac Island located in its northern part. It is an administrative, cultural, economic and tourist centre and is well connected to mainland Croatia, with regular ferry and catamaran services running from Split. Supetar is also an excellent starting point for exploring this beautiful and diverse island. The Supetar Castle is a symbol of the town. It is located at the entrance to the town and is one of the most beautiful buildings on the island of Brac. The Venetians built the castle in the 16th century to protect the town of Supetar from pirates. Once the fortress was home to Petar Hektorović (15th century) – the famous Croatian poet, historian and writer - whose stone statue is in the Church of St. Peter and Paul on the central square (Trg). The castle houses a museum with a collection of archaeological and historical artifacts from the island as well as the collection of the famous painter Vlaho Bukovac (1855-1922). One of the most popular beaches in Supetar is the beach of Skoljic (Skoljic Beach) located on the south side of the island. Skoljic is a small islet with a church of the same name, which was built in honor of St. Nicholas. There is a unique view from the church to Supetar, the island of Hvar and the open sea. In Supetar, there is also a large beach in the harbor area, and the nearby beaches of Splitska, Mirca and Postira are highly recommended.
